Keyword Research
Search any keyword. See volume, CPC, who ranks for it, related terms, and 12-month search trends.
Every SEO strategy starts with understanding what people search for. Before writing content, optimizing pages, or building links, you need to know which keywords are worth pursuing - how many people search for them each month, how much advertisers pay per click, and who already dominates the results page. MeasureBoard's Keyword Research tool answers all of these questions in a single lookup.
What You Get Per Lookup
Type any keyword or phrase into the search box. Within seconds, MeasureBoard returns a comprehensive profile:
- Monthly search volume - the average number of searches per month, with a 12-month bar chart showing seasonal patterns. A keyword with 50,000 searches in January and 10,000 in July tells a different story than one with a flat 30,000 year-round.
- Cost per click (CPC) - what advertisers pay for a single click on a Google Ad for this keyword. High CPC indicates commercial intent and competitive value. A $50 CPC keyword is worth far more to rank for organically than a $0.10 one.
- Competition level - whether advertiser competition for this keyword is LOW, MEDIUM, or HIGH. This reflects paid search competition, which correlates with organic difficulty.
- Search trends - a 12-month trend chart showing relative search interest over time. Rising trends indicate growing demand. Declining trends suggest the keyword may be losing relevance.
Who Currently Ranks
Below the keyword metrics, MeasureBoard shows the current top 10 organic search results for that keyword. Each result includes the ranking position, page title, domain, and a direct link to the page. This tells you exactly who you would be competing against if you targeted this keyword.
Studying the current SERP gives you concrete intelligence: what type of content ranks (listicles vs. guides vs. tools), which domains dominate (are they editorial sites or direct competitors?), and whether the results suggest Google favors a specific content format for this query.
Related Keywords
Each lookup also returns up to 50 related keyword suggestions, each with its own search volume, CPC, and competition data. These are terms that people also search for when they search for your primary keyword - they represent adjacent opportunities you might not have considered.
The related keywords table is sortable by volume, CPC, or alphabetically. Click any related keyword to immediately search for it, making it easy to explore a topic cluster without leaving the page.
How a Single Lookup Works
You type a keyword
"project management software"
4 data sources queried
Volume, SERP, related, trends
Results returned
Volume, CPC, top 10 pages, 50 related keywords, 12-month trend
Results are cached globally for 7 days. Subsequent lookups for the same keyword are instant.
Search Trends: Momentum, Not Just Volume
Monthly search volume tells you the average. Search trends tell you the direction. A keyword with 10,000 monthly searches and a rising trend line is a better investment than one with 10,000 and a declining trend. The 12-month trend chart shows weekly granularity, revealing spikes from news events, seasonal patterns, and long-term trajectory changes that averaged monthly volume hides.
This is particularly useful for identifying emerging topics before they peak. If you spot a keyword with modest volume but a steep upward trend, you can create content now and be established when search demand catches up.
How This Differs from Keyword Opportunities
MeasureBoard has two keyword features that serve different purposes:
- Keyword Opportunities (
/keywords) is automated. It uses your Google Search Console data as seed keywords and generates a list of related opportunities specific to your site. No manual input required. - Keyword Research (
/keyword-research) is freeform. You type any keyword - even one unrelated to your current content - and get the full profile. Use it when brainstorming new content directions, validating topic ideas, or researching a new market.
Rate Limits and Caching
Each lookup costs a small amount to run (four API calls to our data provider), so usage is rate-limited by plan: Starter accounts get 3 lookups per week, Business gets 10 per day, and Pro gets 25 per day. However, results are cached globally across all MeasureBoard users for 7 days - if another user has already searched the same keyword, your lookup is instant and does not count against your limit. In practice, popular keywords are almost always cached.
Practical Workflow
A typical keyword research workflow in MeasureBoard might look like this:
- Start with a broad topic idea - search for your main keyword
- Check the search volume and CPC to validate it is worth pursuing
- Study the SERP results to understand what type of content ranks
- Browse the related keywords for long-tail variations with lower competition
- Click on promising related keywords to explore them further
- Check the trend chart to confirm the keyword is stable or growing
- Use the insights to plan your content calendar
