How to Set Up Google Search Console on BigCommerce (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

BigCommerce supports Search Console verification through two paths: Script Manager (the cleaner option, doesn't require theme editing) or directly in the theme's base.html file. Either takes about 10 minutes. BigCommerce auto-generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml that includes products, categories, brands, and content pages.

What you'll need before you start

  • A BigCommerce store on any plan
  • Owner or staff with permission to access Storefront → Script Manager
  • A Google account

How to set up Google Search Console on BigCommerce: Step-by-step

  1. 1

Add your storefront URL to Search Console

Go to search.google.com/search-console, click Add property, choose URL prefix, and paste your full BigCommerce storefront URL (with https:// and your custom domain). Click Continue.

  2. 2

Copy the HTML meta-tag verification code

On the GSC verification screen, expand HTML tag and copy the entire <meta name="google-site-verification" content="..."> tag.

  3. 3

    Open BigCommerce's Script Manager

In your BigCommerce control panel, go to StorefrontScript Manager. Click Create a Script in the upper-right.

  4. 4

    Configure the script

Fill in the script form: Name: Google Search Console verification. Description: optional. Location on page: Header. Select pages where script will be added: All pages. Script category: Essential (so it isn't blocked by cookie consent). Script type: Script. Paste the entire meta tag in the Scripts contents field. Click Save.

  5. 5

    Click Verify in Search Console

Return to GSC and click Verify. Verification is usually instant. If it fails, view your storefront source (Ctrl+U / Cmd+U) and confirm the meta tag is in the <head> - the Script Manager applies changes within a minute or two.

  6. 6

    Submit BigCommerce's sitemap

BigCommerce auto-generates a sitemap at /sitemap.xml with child sitemaps for products, categories, brands, and pages. In GSC click Sitemaps in the sidebar, paste sitemap.xml, and click Submit. Status should show Success within a few hours.

How to verify your setup is working

Verification status appears in GSC SettingsOwnership verification. Sitemap status appears in Sitemaps. To confirm a specific product or category page is being read correctly, use URL Inspection on the page - it will show whether Google can crawl, render, and index it.

Common issues and fixes

Verification fails despite the script being saved

Two common causes. (1) Script Manager scripts can take 1-2 minutes to apply across the CDN; wait and re-verify. (2) Make sure you set Location to Header (not Footer) - Google needs to find the meta tag in the <head>.

Many product URLs show as "Crawled - currently not indexed"

This is common for large catalogs. Google will index priority pages first (homepage, top categories, best-sellers) and crawl deeper as the site builds authority. Three things help: (1) build internal links from your homepage to your top categories, (2) keep product titles and descriptions unique - duplicate or thin content is a top reason for non-indexing, (3) use URL Inspection to manually request indexing on key pages.

I'm seeing duplicate URLs because of category filters

BigCommerce category pages can generate many URL variations through faceted navigation (filter by price, brand, etc.). To prevent duplicate-content issues, BigCommerce adds rel="canonical" on filtered URLs pointing to the unfiltered category page. Confirm this is happening on a sample filtered URL using GSC URL Inspection - the canonical should point to the parent category.

Frequently asked questions

Does BigCommerce have built-in SEO?

BigCommerce handles the SEO basics: per-page meta titles, meta descriptions, URL slugs, canonical tags, structured data for products (offers, prices, reviews, breadcrumbs), and an auto-generated sitemap. The advanced SEO work (keyword research, copywriting, link building) is up to you. For analytics on actual search performance, you need GSC.

Where is the BigCommerce sitemap?

Every BigCommerce store has a sitemap at your-store.com/sitemap.xml. It includes child sitemaps for products, categories, brands, web pages, and blog posts. BigCommerce regenerates it automatically as your catalog changes.

Can I exclude products from BigCommerce's sitemap?

Setting a product to Hidden visibility removes it from the sitemap and the storefront. Out-of-stock products are still in the sitemap by default, but you can change that under SettingsInventory. For more granular control, you'd need to disable BigCommerce's auto-sitemap and host your own.

How do I add structured data to BigCommerce for Search Console?

BigCommerce emits Product schema (with offers, prices, currency, availability) automatically on every product page. To add additional schema (Organization, BreadcrumbList, Review aggregation), inject it via StorefrontScript Manager as a JSON-LD <script type="application/ld+json"> block. GSC URL Inspection will show what structured data Google is reading from each page.

Why aren't my BigCommerce products appearing in Google?

Common reasons: (1) the products are too new and haven't been crawled yet, (2) the descriptions are too short or copied from supplier feeds (duplicate content), (3) the store has no inbound links yet so Google won't crawl deeply. Check Pages in GSC for Crawled - currently not indexed entries; that's Google saying it found the URL but chose not to index it. The fix is unique content + internal linking + backlinks.

Can I use Google Search Console to track conversions from BigCommerce?

No - GSC only tracks search traffic and clicks. For conversion tracking (which queries lead to purchases), you need Google Analytics 4. The two tools complement each other: GSC tells you which queries surface your products, GA4 tells you which clicks turn into orders.
