How to Install Google Tag Manager on Wix (2026 Step-by-Step Guide)

Wix has a dedicated Google Tag Manager tile in its Marketing Integrations panel - paste your container ID, save, publish, and you're running GTM site-wide. The setup takes about 5 minutes. The catch: like every Wix integration, GTM requires a Premium plan and a connected custom domain.

What you'll need before you start

  • A Wix site on a Premium plan with a connected custom domain
  • Owner or contributor with Manager role or higher
  • A Google account

How to install Google Tag Manager on Wix: Step-by-step

  1. 1

Create a GTM container at tagmanager.google.com

Go to tagmanager.google.com, sign in, click Create Account, fill in account name and country, container name (your domain), and target platform Web. Accept the Terms. Note your GTM-XXXXXXX container ID - that's all Wix needs.

  2. 2

Open Marketing Integrations in your Wix dashboard

From your Wix dashboard, click Marketing & SEO in the left sidebar, then Marketing Integrations. Find Google Tag Manager in the list and click Connect.

  3. 3

    Paste your container ID

In the popup, paste your GTM-XXXXXXX ID into the field. Click Save. Wix handles both the head <script> and the body <noscript> placement automatically - you don't need to copy the full snippets.

  4. 4

    Publish your site

Wix saves the integration to the editor draft, but the GTM snippet won't actually appear on your live site until you publish. Click Publish in the top-right of your dashboard. If your site is already live, the change deploys immediately.

  5. 5

Add a tag in GTM and submit

Back in tagmanager.google.com, click TagsNew. For GA4, choose Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration, paste your Measurement ID, set trigger to All Pages, save. Click Submit in the top-right to publish the container.

  6. 6

    Verify with GTM Preview

In GTM, click Preview, paste your Wix custom-domain URL, click Connect. The debug window should show your container loaded and any configured tags firing under Tags Fired.

How to verify your setup is working

GTM Preview mode is the cleanest verification. The free Google Tag Assistant Chrome extension is faster for spot-checking individual pages. If you've configured GA4 inside GTM, Realtime in GA4 should show your test session within 30-60 seconds.

Common issues and fixes

I don't see Google Tag Manager in Wix's Marketing Integrations

The integration is gated to Premium plans with a connected custom domain. If your site is on the free plan or still uses a wixsite.com address, GTM is hidden. Upgrade to any Premium plan and connect a domain via SettingsDomains to unlock it.

GTM Preview can't connect to my Wix site

Two common causes. (1) You haven't republished your site since saving the integration - hit Publish in Wix. (2) Wix's cookie consent banner is blocking the GTM script. Open SettingsCookies & Tracking in your Wix dashboard and confirm Analytics cookies are allowed, or test in incognito and click Accept all on the banner.

Wix Stores ecommerce events aren't appearing in GA4 via GTM

Wix Stores does push some ecommerce events into dataLayer, but the events use Wix-specific naming rather than GA4's standard names. To capture them, configure GA4 Event tags in GTM with triggers matching the Wix-specific event names (look in GTM Preview's data layer panel to see what Wix is firing) and remap fields to GA4 conventions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install Google Tag Manager on a free Wix site?

No. The GTM integration is gated to Premium plans with a connected custom domain. Free Wix sites cannot install GTM at all. Upgrade to any Premium plan to unlock it.

Should I use Google Tag Manager or Wix's native Google Analytics integration?

Use the native GA4 integration if GA4 is the only tag you'll ever run. Switch to GTM the moment you add a second tag (Meta Pixel, LinkedIn Insight, conversion APIs). Don't run both - that double-tracks every event. Either disable Wix's native GA4 integration or don't add GA4 to GTM.

Does Wix support Google Tag Manager ecommerce events?

Wix Stores fires ecommerce events into dataLayer, but with Wix-specific naming rather than GA4 standards. To pipe them into GA4 properly, configure GA4 Event tags in GTM with triggers matching the Wix events, then map fields to GA4 conventions. There's no first-party Wix tool that does this remapping for you.

Is Google Tag Manager free on Wix?

GTM itself is free. Wix charges for the Premium plan that unlocks the GTM integration (the cheapest Premium plan starts around $17/month at time of writing). There are no per-tag or per-event fees.

Can I install Google Tag Manager via Wix Studio?

Yes - Wix Studio has the same Marketing Integrations panel under MarketingToolsIntegrations. The flow is identical to classic Wix. Studio sites must also be on a paid plan with a custom domain.

How do I know Google Tag Manager is working on my Wix site?

Use GTM's Preview mode - paste your Wix custom-domain URL and click Connect. The debug window shows every tag fired and every trigger matched. The Google Tag Assistant Chrome extension is faster for confirming the GTM container ID is loading on each page.
